Flying high on Christmas day

I took my camelot macaw Endymion to the mountains for Christmas day. My friend Ryan from SoCal Free Flight lives up there and he has two Scarlet macaws who like my bird and enjoy flying together. It’s super cool to see the three birds flocking and flying high in between the mountains.

I fly Endymion at my place almost everyday. He enjoys it but you can tell that it is nothing compared to the joy he experiences flying with other birds. At the end of the day, parrots are social animals. In the wild, you always find them in big flocks diving the skies or at least in pairs showing love for each-other.

Flying in group is also safer for them. Free-flying birds is dangerous. There are many predators around, specially in the air. Hawks, falcons, eagles -to name a few- are always around and they are not flying for fun. Birds of pray are always in the hunt, and sometimes they’re very hungry because they have not eaten for days.

My friend Ryan’s macaws are very experienced birds. They’ve been flying those mountains for years. My bird Endymion is a younger parrot who is still brushing on his flying skills. You can see him in the sky trying to follow and copying what the other birds are doing. Flying for birds is like walking or running or even driving for us. They need to practice and they improve with every opportunity they have to fly. I can tell Endymion learns a lot when he flies with other birds. He needs to keep up with them, turn with them, try not to hit them, dive down when he’s too high, etc.

The parrots had a great Christmas day and so did we! Cheers to you and your families. My best wishes for all of you.
