Me and my pets
Animals are my passion. I don’t have any kids -and I don’t plan on doing that- but I do have many pets. I currently share my life with three dogs, three parrots and three tortoises. I enjoy teaching them what I know and l absolutely love learning what they have for me. Animals speak, but only to those who want and know how to listen.
The blog
I record my experiences with my pets in this blog. The fun part of husbandry is that everyday is different. My animals surprise me with something new every day. Well, I should say every moment. I wish I had the time to record everything but I can only pick one or sometimes a few relevant events of the day to write about. Specially when I want to keep data to analice the progress of a specific behavior.
All my pets where born in captivity. I think this is important to clarify because I don’t want to encourage people to take animals out of the wild. I will totally hate that. My pets come from people who breed animals humanly, with love for the specie and concerns about conservation. I always research extensively before deciding who I am getting my pet from.
“Animals do speak, but only if you want and know how to listen.”
Another thing that I’d like to point out about me is that I neither rescue nor adopt animals and I am not building an animal sanctuary neither in Florida nor in California. At least not for now. It sounds bad but it’s the truth. Running an animal sanctuary requires a lot of knowledge, money, time, and vet visits. Many of the things that I am not able to do at the moment. However, I do have the dream to build an animal shelter in my home town in Northern Argentina where I might be able to afford the costs of the operation, but that is still a dream without a plan.
I do support many rescue, research and conservation facilities in or close to my community with my donations and volunteering. I think I can do more by helping stablished organizations that have the power to save many animal lives than trying to do it alone. The rescues I help and I invite you to help are: the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary and the Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Florida; the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance in California and Montecito de los Canichones in Argentina. Please, pick one or two animal organizations and support them. They have the means to save and protect a lot of animals.
Finally, I want you know that I am not a vet. I graduated from Journalism school in Madrid, Spain and I am currently enrolled in the Environmental Managment program at University of Florida, and even though sometimes I mention some treatments or dietary supplements that I give to my animals they must not be taken as medical advise. All I share is my personal experience of owning and training animals and some advises that I’ve got from professionals in the field or from amazing mentors that I’ve met in this furry, scaly and feathery journey.
My commitment
I want everybody to start seeing animals as something else than just pets, livestock or food. Animals might not have the abstract thinking that we, humans, do but they are smart in their own ways. Animals are in fact similar to humans in many aspects. They seek love, they dislike pain, they like a good meal, they are scared of unknown places or objects, they enjoy playing, they even display grief in a manner similar to humans. In the idiom department, animals developed their own communication system with in the species but just as we have can learn an international language, we can teach animals a set of codes to be able to communicate with them through training. Remember, animals do speak but only if you want and know how to listen.
